California is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. Many of its plant species are endemic, found nowhere else on earth. That plant diversity supports an equally remarkable diversity of pollinators. There are approximately 1,600 native bee species in California. Most people think of the honey bee first, but honey bees are an introduced species. California's native bees include ground-nesters, cavity-nesters, and solitary species, each with distinct behavior and ecological needs.


The Bay Area sits within this extraordinary ecosystem. Designing a garden that supports it isn't complicated, but it does require understanding a few key principles. This guide covers the fundamentals of pollinator garden design in the Bay Area, from plant selection to nesting habitat, grounded in current ecological research.


Why Design With Pollinators in Mind

Bees pollinate fruit trees, vegetables, and many ornamental plants. A garden designed to support pollinators is also a more productive garden. But there's a simpler reason too. Bay Area Pollinator Garden Design Starts With Year-Round Blooms

The most important principle in pollinator garden design is continuous bloom. Pollinators need nectar and pollen sources across the entire growing season, not just in spring. A garden that blooms heavily in April and then offers nothing by August fails the bees that depend on it through summer and fall.


Good pollinator garden design sequences flowering plants so that several are blooming at any given time. Early bloomers matter especially for bumble bee queens, mining bees, and mason bees emerging in late winter and early spring. These early foragers need food sources before most ornamental plants have opened. Late bloomers are equally important. Baccharis, one of the few plants that flowers in late fall, is a critical nectar source for bees building strength before winter. Bumble bee queens going into hibernation need strong late-season nutrition to survive.


In the Bay Area's mild climate, year-round bloom is genuinely achievable. Our winters are cool but not cold enough to shut the garden down entirely. With thoughtful plant selection, a Bay Area pollinator garden can offer something for bees in every month of the year.


Plant Diversity: More Species, More Bees

Research by Gordon Frankie and colleagues at the UC Berkeley Urban Bee Lab found that eight or more flowering plant species attracts a significantly greater diversity of native bees, with diversity leveling off around twenty species. For a San Francisco pollinator garden, this means variety matters as much as quantity.


Diversity in a pollinator planting isn't just about having many different species. It means varying flower shape, size, color, and plant height to accommodate pollinators with different tongue lengths and body sizes. A garden planted entirely with salvias, even many different salvias, will not support the full range of pollinators that a more varied planting would. Salvias are excellent for pollinators, they just can't do the job alone.


Including plants from different genera creates the structural variety that different bee species need. The Lamiaceae and Asteraceae families are particularly valuable. Specific plants that perform well in California native pollinator gardens include ceanothus, manzanita, yarrow, phacelia, sticky monkey flower, California buckeye, western redbud, and baccharis. Good non-native plants also support pollinators and earn their place in a well-designed garden. Lavender, catmint, foxglove, coreopsis, and verbena all attract bees reliably. Companion plants like alyssum and calendula are particularly useful in edible gardens, where they support beneficial insects as part of an integrated pest management approach. Annual and perennial herbs, artichokes, berries, and fruit trees in the Prunus family are also excellent pollinator resources.


Planting Density and Groupings

How you arrange plants matters as much as which plants you choose. A common mistake in pollinator garden design is planting one of each species across a bed. Single specimen plants are harder for flying insects to locate, especially in urban environments where pollinators must navigate fragmented habitat.


Research supports planting in clumps of at least three feet in diameter for each individual species. Grouped plantings give pollinators a larger target to find. Once there, bees can stay in one place longer, reducing the energy they spend traveling between food sources. Dense groupings also provide more food resources per visit and create a more naturalistic look. Odd numbers of plants within a grouping tend to look more balanced visually.


Native Plants vs. Introduced Species: What the Research Shows

Research by Gordon Frankie at UC Berkeley found that native plants are four times more likely to attract native bees than introduced species. Research by Douglas Tallamy at the University of Delaware found that native plants support three times as many butterflies and moths as introduced species in the same genera. Native woody species showed an even more striking result, supporting fourteen times more species than introduced ornamentals.


This doesn't mean a pollinator garden needs to be planted exclusively with California natives. Introduced plants can play a supporting role, and many gardeners want some flexibility in their plant palette. Research by Desiree Narango, Doug Tallamy, and Peter Marra at the University of Delaware found that gardens with at least 70% native plants provide enough habitat to support healthy populations of birds, butterflies, and bees. That 70% threshold is a practical and achievable goal for most Bay Area gardens.


Invasive plants are a separate matter. Plants like introduced mustard provide abundant nectar for a short period but out-compete the diverse native species that would otherwise provide forage throughout the year. A brief flush of nectar from an invasive plant is not a substitute for a well-sequenced native planting.

Nesting Habitat: Beyond the Flowers

Most pollinator garden guides focus on plants. Nesting habitat gets less attention and is just as important. California's native bees nest in a variety of ways. Ground-nesting bees need patches of bare, unmulched soil. Cavity-nesting bees use hollow stems and holes in wood. Supporting a diverse native bee population means providing for both.


Leave some areas of your garden without mulch. Bare ground is not always a problem to solve. It can be a nesting site. Unmulched areas also make good spots for sowing wildflower seeds, which need direct contact with soil to germinate.


Mud is another resource worth preserving. Some bees use mud to construct nest cells. A small muddy patch or shallow puddle gives bees water and minerals. These features occur naturally in most gardens. Leave them.


Dried flower stalks left standing through winter provide overwintering sites for bees. A loosely stacked pile of pruned branches, berry canes, or hollow dried sunflower stalks serves the same purpose. A rock pile with a vine grown over it creates additional cover. These are features of a thoughtfully managed garden, not signs of neglect.


Bee hotels have become popular and are sold at many nurseries. They require more maintenance than most gardeners realize. Without regular replacement every two years and proper decommissioning, bee hotels can become reservoirs for parasites and disease. For most home gardens, the effort is better spent maintaining good garden conditions: some bare soil, hollow stems, and a diverse planting that supports bees throughout their life cycle.


Pollinator Gardens and Edible Gardens

Pollinator-focused planting and food gardening work well together. Many of the plants that attract and support bees are also productive in the kitchen or orchard. Fruit trees in the Prunus family, berries, artichokes, and annual and perennial herbs all provide pollen and nectar while producing food. Companion plants like alyssum and calendula planted near vegetables attract beneficial insects that naturally control pests, reducing the need for intervention.

Designing a California Native Pollinator Garden: Where to Start

A well-designed pollinator garden doesn't require a complete yard overhaul. A single bed planted with eight or more native species, sequenced for year-round bloom and arranged in clumps, will attract a meaningful diversity of bees. From there, the garden can grow over time.
